Steens Mountain -- Harney County, OR

Steens Mountain was named after Major Enoch Steen, 1st U.S. Dragoons, who was sent to the area in 1860 to determine the feasibility of routes from the Willamette Valley to Southeastern Oregon.  Steen's historical fame came from his pursuit of Paiute Indians up the Donner and Blitzen River to the summit of the mountain and down the rough Wildhorse Canyon to the Alvord country.
